Amalfi Sailing Flotilla – Day 4

Well, if we found yesterday a tad “adventurous” all it did was sort of prepare us for today! It started out quite nice, a bit of sun, rolling seas, but not too cold, then as the sail progressed we rolled, and we bounced, and we almost managed to dodge the thunderstorms…. Well we dodged the first one, but we got caught right in the middle of the second one! Thunder, lightening, rolling seas…. And freezing cold! Glynis and I were literally shaking with the cold, even with fleeces and rain jackets on. Geez, it was colder than sailing in Scotland! The photos just don’t show it, but hopefully Paul’s video when it’s all ready will do.

Getting closer to the storm!

It was what flotillas refer to as a “free sail” day, so within reason you choose where you go and do your own thing. We chose Capri, along with 4 of the 10 other yachts. Some stayed on Ischia (however they will have a very LONG sail tomorrow) and some went to Sorrento (which we decided against as we are going there in a couple of days anyway).

Luckily we got help again mooring, one of the other yachts who had chartered a skipper got in before us, and helped us out. Capri is quite a stunning island, more so when the storm had passed over…

One other thing we have become very aware of in Italy is the exorbitant cost of the marina fees, which apart from mooring have between little to no facilities. Last night was 55 Euros, no facilities at all, and tonight 130 Euros plus you pay for your electric, all they have is a couple of toilets and showers (no shower gel, hairdryer etc). One of the 44 foot yachts were charged 280 Euros! This will definitely put us off sailing in Italy again.

As we booked a food & wine flotilla, most meals are included, so tonight we decided to make an “eat on board” night. We had already pre-planned it to an extent and had brought with us paella rice and spices. It was great, and of course very cheap.

Now we are sitting on deck with a glass of wine and blankets over us to keep warm!

We have been told this is the last of the “bad weather” so fingers crossed and we will see what tomorrow brings….

Amalfi Sailing Flotilla – Day 3

Sunday 19th May:

Wow, it was a COLD night! We were kitted out with one blanket per cabin, so along with most other people on the flotilla, we asked for a 2nd blanket, much needed.

It was a bit of a hairy first day, started out ok, although we motored rather than sailed to our lunch stop at Aragonese Castle. The weather had turned a bit cold, with the odd shower and a very fresh breeze! We were glad we had all brought fleeces and jackets! Apparently it is unusually cold for this time of year. However, the occasional break in the clouds let some sun through and warmed us up a little.

imageimageimage

We then decided to get the genoa sail out and see if we could catch some wind, which we certainly did! However, as we were more or less sailing into the wind, we had to do some long taks, which made it slow going. On top of this, the sea swell was around 2 metres and coming side on, so it was a rough ride, lots of bumping and rolling. We decided not to hoist the main sail, and after a while put the motor back on and motor-sailed to the port (Forio on Ischia), with a very brief stop in a pretty bay to bring the genoa in where the water was calmer, before reaching the port.

imageimageWe had a short walk around, then dinner and wine as part of our “package” with the flotilla group – 38 of us, so possibly the largest flotilla group we have had. Good company, nice meal, but the local wine wasn’t really to our taste.

We are not yet sure if we are now going to Capri tomorrow as the lead crew indicated it could be a “rough night” as the weather forecast is not so good. Our briefing is at 9am tomorrow, so we shall see….

Amalfi Sailing Flotilla – Day 2

Saturday 18th May:

We slept so well, it had been a long day yesterday. Now we have joined our flotilla and will spend our first night in our yacht “Cerbiatta”.

image

It was a good day, we left our luggage at the Sunsail / Sail Italia office, did the “check in”, then explored the island, walking up to its highest point for great views, with lots of historic places to see. We then spent some time & had lunch at Corricella Marina, which was super pretty.

Our yacht was ready early, so we got the annoying / important bit out of they (checking off the “inventory” and the technical briefing) and stocked up on some provisions. As we are on a “food & wine” flotilla, we shouldn’t need to do much cooking, and tonight at the “welcome party” we were plied with yummy pizza and plentiful wine!

The other people on the flotilla we got speaking to seem really nice, I think we are going to have a great week!

Amalfi Sailing Flotilla – Day 1 – arriving in Procida

Friday 17thMay:

A very early start, up at 4.15am to get to Edinburgh for our 7.20am flight to Naples.

It was a long day, but all went well. By the time we arrived at Naples airport, Glynis & Tony were already on the hydrofoil over to Procida island. Lucky for us as they were able to tell us where to get the bus (5 Euros pp) to the port etc. It was all pretty easy. We took the ferry (25 Euros for the 2 of us) rather than the hydrofoil, as some of the hydrofoils were already fully booked, both go from different ports, but the bus stops at both, so all was well. The hydrofoil is a bit more expensive.

We arrived, bought our tickets, had lunch then took the 3.15pm ferry over to Procida where we met up with Glynis & Tony, who had already sorted out a lift to our accommodation on the other side of the island.

The one stand out thing I have noticed in Italy so far is a distinct lack of toilet seats! In the airport, on the ferry, in restaurants…. I am not a particularly hygienic person, but no toilet seats for some reason grosses me out….

Our accommodation was a bargain at 50 Euros for an apartment with 2 king rooms and a balcony with views over the marina at Chiaiolella.

A fairly early night was the order of the day after a nice pizza meal. Tired, but happy…

Amalfi Sailing Flotilla, May 2019

Tomorrow (17th May) we are heading out to Procida Island off the Amalfi Coast of Italy to join a sailing flotilla on a “Food & Wine” trip.

We are sailing with Glynis & Tony (Paul’s sister & brother-in-law) and spending a night on Procida before the flotilla, and a night in Naples afterwards.

Follow our blog here, hoping to get some wifi now & then so I can write as we travel …..

Inchcailloch Island on Loch Lomond

So we decided it might be fun to buy an inflatable canoe from Amazon, at only £90 it seemed to be a bargain! Here is the link if you are interested. So far, so good!

Canoe trip Inchcailloch 12th May (3)
Canoe just been inflated and ready for our first trip!

We took our fist venture out in it this weekend, 12th May, to “test the water” so to speak (or to test if any water got into it!)
As we have not yet bought any buoyancy aids, we didn’t want to be far from land, so Inchcailloch island on Loch Lomond, just off the shore at Balmaha (near the Oak Tree Inn) was a perfect choice. Only about 15 mins between the shores of Balmaha and the shores of the island.
It was great! We probably should have topped it up before setting off on our way back, it would have been fine, but we ended erring on the side of caution and going ashore (on the stony bit, which fortunately went ok!) to just blow it up a little bit more, as it had deflated just a little bit while we had been ashore for around 3 hours.

Canoe trip Inchcailloch 12th May (39)
Mostly rocky / stony shoreline – a short stop to re-inflate the canoe as it had gone down just a little after our island stop

Initially our plan was to spend most of our time on the island, and just to “test” the canoe out getting there & back via the shortest route. However, the shoreline was rocky / stony, and the closer pier was quite high above the water line, no really suitable for a low canoe to dock at.

Canoe trip Inchcailloch 12th May (5)
Canoeing round Inchcailloch

So we ended up having a lovely trip round the island, and docking just over half way round at the Port Bawn Pier, which was perfect for docking the canoe and for a picnic on the beach, followed by further exploration of the island before continuing our trip around the island and back to Balmaha.

Canoe trip Inchcailloch 12th May (9)
Prosecco and tuna sandwiches – perfect!

The island was stunning, especially with our favourite flowers (bluebells) in bloom, and the view from the highest part (an easy walk up) was beautiful!

This is a great place to go on a sunny day, even if you are not into canoeing, you can get a boat ride over from Balmaha to the closer pier. The island is small, so you can easily hike around it from any landing spot.

Lofoten Day 9 – Sad to be leaving …. and a quick summary of our week & our recommendations

So our week in Lofoten has now come to an end. The weather is still bad, and forecast for Saturday not good either, more storms due, so I suppose that makes it a bit easier to be going.

We were tremendously lucky with the weather, and getting those 2 days of blue skies is apparently pretty unusual for March. We certainly saw Lofoten in many weather conditions.

Our direct flight with Widerøe back to Oslo was at 1.55pm, which worked great with our noon check out time from our cabin. A short drive to the airport, fill up the petrol en route, park the car, drop the keys in the key box – sorted.

The flight was smooth, although there were no views until ready to land, due to cloud cover.

Arrived at Oslo, checked in to our airport hotel, the Park Inn again, a short walk from the terminal, then met up with our friends Mike & Sam, who live near Oslo, for dinner, which was lovely.

To summarise our trip …

  • A week is a good amount of time, even if in winter and not hiking. Although driving distances are short, if you want to allow for bad weather, a week gives you plenty of leeway. If you are short of time you can do all the highlight in 3 (or at a push 2) days – heading North once day, South the next, and local side trips on the other day.
  • Assuming there are no nasty surprises when we see the charge goes through our bank (if there are I will update this to reflect that), then Keddy by Europcar (booked through Vehicle Rent) worked great – friendly staff, good car, good email communication, easy pick up & drop off, good price at approx £30 per day.
  • Although it can be a bit more expensive, the twice weekly direct flights between Oslo & Leknes save time and the hassle of changing flights en route.
  • As a base, in the vicinity of Leknes is a great choice. If you plan to travel as far south as the road goes (to A) and as far north as Svolvær, then Leknes is approximately half way in between. This means no really long journeys from south to north or vice versa.
You also have the convenience of the town’s facilities, including 2 large supermarkets, a booze shop, a recycling centre at the big supermarket (you pay a deposit on plastic bottles & cans, but you can take them for recycling and get your money back via a supermarket voucher), restaurants (if you plan to eat out), fuel stations etc.
At the same time, choose to stay 2-3 kms outside the town, you can feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, as we did in our cabin on the fjord.
And finally, no long journeys from / to the airport, so you don’t have to worry too much about bad weather on your arrival or departure.

A couple of photos from our last day… bye bye Lofoten (not the best of photos as we missed seeing all the jagged mountains due to us going into cloud very quickly!)

Lofoten Day 8 – the storm hits!

So we noticed a post on Facebook last night suggesting a storm was coming…well it certainly did! It’s been a wild day, most of it we stayed in and really enjoyed just watching the waves crashing over the deck outside our cabin with rain, hail and snow showers thrown in. Occasionally, although the wind and wild seas continued, the weather broke a little and let some sun shine through.

Later in the afternoon, when some sun and blue sky had broken through (the wind was still blowing a gale!) we decided to take a short drive out back to some of the beaches we visited yesterday. We somehow managed to choose the best window of opportunity, and saw these same beaches in a more dramatic setting and light conditions, so it was definitely worth a revisit!

We have certainly experienced many different weather fronts whilst in Lofoten. Flights were cancelled, so it is just as well we are not due to leave today, however the storm is still raging and it’s 9pm now…. flight tomorrow is at 1.40pm, so watch this space!

See what you think, photos below both of the storm from our cabin, and of the beaches of Vik and Haukland….

Lofoten Day 7 – it’s all about the beaches….

So today the weather started out looking promising again, and we decided to head out to the beaches of Uttakliev, Haukland & Vik, all very close to each other so not much driving required. These beaches are around 12kms from Leknes, and about the same from our cabin.

It was lucky we made another fairly early start as the weather deteriorated by midday.

Uttakliev is apparently the most popular beach for photography, with the big round boulders scattering it giving lots of photo opportunities. There is also a big heart shaped rock balancing on a huge boulder. This beach is also popular for photographing the northern lights.

Haukland is probably the most visited by tourists due to its soft pale sand and turquoise sea, and is popular for catching some sun in summer. However, for me the one I liked best was Vik, which you arrive at just before Haukand (the latter of which was, at the time, full of people who seemed to be on a photography tour).

For me Vik had the most stunning backdrop, with mountains looking in both directions along the long pale sandy beach (see the panorama photo below). Paul, however, preferred Uttakliev beach. They are all stunning though, and all worth a visit.

We also drove on to Eggum beach, which we had missed on day 4, as we had plenty of time. The drive was lovely, but when we finally got there I have to say we both thought it was a let down. And also the only place we have had to pay for parking! Perhaps the fact that the weather had deteriorated and it had started to rain didn’t help, but neither of us even bothered to take a photograph. It is the only place we have been in Lofoten that we would agree was “underwhelming”. However, please don’t let our opinion put you off going, and remember, the drive in was very nice.

See what you think from the photos below (by the way, the one with the little red cabin was taken just along from where we are staying, not at any of the beaches mentioned above)….

Lofoten Day 6 – Ballstad and Nothern Lights photos from previous evenings

The weather has broken today, what we call “dreicht” back in Scotland!

So just a short trip out today to Ballstad, which is one of the largest fishing villages in Lofoten. I’m sure we didn’t see it at its best due to the overcast weather, but I am happy with some of the photos we took, which I think gives a good idea of how pretty it is (or would be in good weather).

Being a fishing village, there is a LOT of cod out drying, both the fish and the heads (nothing goes to waste here!)

A few photos from Ballstad….

For Northern Lights viewing, we saw them mainly by looking North and West. Our cabin looks out more or less to the West, and we saw a lot of the aurora just by looking directly out the windows! However we had to go outside and walk past our row of cabins, to get the aurora to the North.

Both gave great views with nice background, but we especially liked looking outside over the fjord, where we got a reflection of both the mountains and some of the aurora.

A few of our best Northern Lights photos…
