Carcassonne & Andorra

Carcassonne is a wonderful town to visit in its own right and has a wonderful medieval citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) perched on a hilltop just outside the town. It’s situated in the Languedoc region of the south of France and has an airport. At the time we went Ryanair flew there so flights were cheap.

We visited in 2015 and decided to combine the trip with a week in Andorra. It was easy to do as Andorra is very close to Carcassonne, so we arranged a hire car just for the week in Andorra and saw Carcassonne on foot. In Carcassonne, we spent two nights on arrival staying near the citadel in the stunning Franck Putelat in a room with private hot tub and a further night in the beautiful O’Vineyards just outside of town before flying home.

It was summer (August) and we saw many fields of beautiful sunflowers as we drove from Carcassonne to Andorra.

Being in the Pyrenees, there is plenty of good hiking in Andorra so you’re spoiled for choice. We based ourselves at the Sport Hotel Hermitage and Spa in Soldeu, so we had access to the amazing spa after our day hikes. We would highly recommend this hotel. Our room was spacious and very comfortable and opened on to a large balcony with lovely views up the valley – great for sitting out in the evening. August wasn’t particularly warm (being in the mountains it rarely goes over 20 degrees celsius), but that suited us fine for hiking.

There was a great tapas bar near to the hotel La Taverna de la Iaia which is worth a recommendation. They don’t have a website so I can’t post a link, however, you can find them on Facebook.

Below is a selection of our best photos from this trip…
