Cuba

The thing that drew us to Cuba was not it’s beaches (although we did spend a pleasant week in Varadero), but to see and experience for ourselves the colourful vintage American cars and brightly painted colonial buildings. We ended up opting for a 10 night package tour that gave us time to explore both Havana (3 nights) and Trinidad (2 nights), plus a week of beach relaxation afterwards.

Cuba did not disappoint. I don’t think I recall any country being as vibrant, and we loved the feeling of stepping back in time. Havana was fantastic and our highlight was an afternoon being driven around in a vintage convertible, but Trinidad wowed us even more. If Havana was like stepping back in time, Trinidad felt like it took you back even further. It’s a small town which also has the vintage cars and cobbled streets, and we enjoyed an evening street party with music and dancing. Some people still use horses to travel within the town. The town of Trinidad is easily walkable (the main sights of Havana were also walkable, although you had a lot more distance to cover). Both Trinidad and Old Havana are UNESCO World heritage Sites.

Here is our “photo journey” through Havana, Trinidad and Varadero…
