Lapland (Sweden)

We’ve always been keen on winter holidays and winter activities, so when we saw an Exodus trip to Swedish Lapland which included (among other things) snowmobiling, dog sledding, cross country skiing and a trip to the Ice Hotel, we were sold! Unfortunately, they no longer do this trip. There is a similar one, but with a different base and minus the Ice Hotel.

We had to take two flights to get to our base near Kiruna. During the week we also headed into the wilderness and stayed a night in a rustic lodge and another night in a small rustic cabin. We had a guide with us throughout, who also cooked all our delicious meals. At the wilderness lodge, we had use of a sauna, where you cooled off in the snow afterwards! We also got lucky enough to see the Northern Lights, but have no photographs as we only had a basic camera back then.

The activity highlights were the dog sledding, which was crazy and exhilarating, and the snowmobiling. We also loved our visit to the Ice Hotel, which appears in our Top 10 Most Awesome Places to Stay.

We travelled at the end of March/beginning of April, so the days were still pretty short and there was plenty of snow. It’s also a good time to see the Northern Lights before the days start to stretch out into the endless daylight in the height of summer.

Here is a “photo journey” of some of our highlights…
